Volunteer

Contribute towards making the World a better one!

We promise you a friendly welcome and the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of the children at our school.

VOLUNTEERING DESCRIPTIONS AND POSITIONS

  • We are seeking volunteer English, biology and computer teachers. You will be involved in teaching secondary-level students, and planning lessons. The average class size is 65. Ideally, you should also be able to provide training/mentoring to other teachers at the school. Although we have a small number of computers, this is especially important for computer teachers as none of our staff have experience in teaching IT skills.

  • We are also looking for a volunteer-fundraiser for projects both for the school and for outside the school. A projects writer is also needed. Though actual physical experience of the school will be helpful, this volunteering task can also be performed remotely at a distance (online).

  • We also seek volunteers who can help building and practicing agriculture, and can help us setting up programs to help outside communities in the region (including environmental programs, setting up pumps for irrigation, water and sanitation programs, building knowledge, and others).

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

For teaching roles, you must be knowledgeable of the subject you intend to teach; and we can help you with class preparation and lessons.

For other roles, you should have practical experience in the area in which you wish to volunteer.

PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS

We welcome volunteers from anywhere in the world. You must be flexible, open-minded and keen to work with and learn from people from different cultures. Preference will be given to men and women aged 30-60. Although the school is run along Christian lines, you may be from any (or no) religion, as long as you respect our beliefs. You must be able to speak and write fluent English. As Uganda only has limited healthcare facilities, you should be in reasonable health.

DATES

Volunteers are required during school terms which run from February-April, June-early August, late August-November.

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD

There are two rooms available at the school for volunteers to stay in. During school hours you will eat with the children, and there are facilities for you to prepare your own food in the evenings and weekends or you can eat with the students who board at the school. There is a supply of clean water, and you will use sit-down toilets.

LEISURE TIME

During weekends you will be free to relax and visit places of interest in the Masaka area, or travel more widely in Uganda. The people in the area surrounding the school are friendly and happy to get to know visitors.

We are near Lake Nabugabo and Lake Victoria, where you can watch the wildlife or go to the beach. You can also visit the Catholic cathedral and burial place of Fr. Ngobya who was said to have miraculous powers.

COSTS

You are responsible for paying for your own airfare, visa, medical and travel insurance, and for leisure activities.

We only request volunteers for a contribution of USD$100 per month towards water bills, electricity, and others. You are welcome to make a donation to the school if you wish, and it’ll be very much appreciated.

TRAVELLING TO THE SCHOOL

You can make your own way to the school, or can be collected from Entebbe International airport or Kampala. If we collect you, travel will be by taxi or public transport, and there will be a charge of USD$6 for one-way trip to cover expenses.
